Samsung Cube Air Purifier Review 2022

Samsung Smart Cube Rebiew

Samsung recently came out with its very own first cube air purifier, which shows a lot of promise in the air purifying world. In this post, I want to go over the different characteristics of this model, what it can offer, its positives & negatives, and a short conclusion at the end, So stick around and look at the complete Samsung cube air purifier review.

Choosing the correct air purifier (especially ones that are priced high) is a very important aspect of a potential purchase, as these are usually long-term investments. While Samsung is a well-established brand mainly associated with phones, they recently decided to dip their toes in the air purifying world. In this Samsung air purifier review, let’s see how they did with their Cube Smart air purifier.

Samsung Cube Smart Air Purifier – Features

I want to start this review with an overview of the important features of this air purifier, with some extra comments from my side. Here are the main features that caught my eye:

Multi-step purification system.

Cube smart uses the “standard” 3-stage filtration system, which consists of a pre-filter, activated carbon filter, and lastly, we have HEPA filtration with an ultrafine dust filter. The pre-filter is there to capture only the most significant air particles and thus put less stress on the other two filter types. Next, we have a carbon-activated filter solely to remove odors and gases.

HEPA filtration is the primary air cleaning technology used and does most of the heavy lifting when removing harmful airborne pollutants. While this is a standard setup, the quality of components is our main differentiator from the competition, as Samsung put a lot of effort into their seemingly “basic” purification system. More on this in the pros&cons section.

Advanced air quality sensor.

I love it when air purifiers, especially with this price tag attached, come with intelligent features, and Cube Smart is no different here. It has a futuristic-looking air quality sensor, which measures PM 10, PM 2.5, and PM1.0-sized particles. This is a pretty advanced sensor, as most others usually show just one or two of these numbers. By having all 3, you can get an accurate indicator of how your air quality improved over time.

High CADR rating of 200/205/185 cfm

These are pretty good numbers that tell you how fast an air purifier can clean the air in particular room size. The CADR rating for this air purifier was measured and designed for medium-sized rooms of up to 310 square feet. This makes it a suitable choice for most living rooms and/or offices (in addition to all other smaller rooms, of course).

All these numbers are backed up and verified by AHAM, so you can be sure that what you are getting is the real deal. If you are unaware, AHAM is an industry-recognized standard for Air Purifiers that measures their effectiveness according to specific criteria. It is not mandatory but remains an excellent investment for any brand, as it adds a layer of trustworthiness.

Unique modular design

Samsung`s Cube Smart looks rather unique in terms of its looks, which is to be expected from such a well-known brand. It looks like a mini-fridge and is shaped like a cube, as the name already suggests. This gives it some versatility as the dimensions allow you to stack multiple units on top of each other – why would you need that? With more than 1 unit, you can cover more extensive areas than 310 square feet, and the unique modular design makes this more easily achievable.

Samsung Cube Air Purifier – Pros & Cons

This will be the central and most important part of my Cube Smart air purifier review. I am going to list all of the things that I liked and disliked about this device. I will also explain each point as I go, so you can better understand my reasoning.

Pros

Good quality HEPA filtration with no ozone. Â I have to start things off with a big + on the filtration system. While there is nothing extraordinary about it (such as extra filtration layers/addons) you get quality over quantity – which matters for modern air purifiers. It is better to have a more basic filtration set up with good, quality components rather than a complex system with average components. There are quite a few different tiers of HEPA filters, and Samsung Cube uses a top-tier one that is indeed 99,97% effective. All of the claims are backed up by official certification, so you get what the product description lists.

Oh, and this filtration system has no ozone as a byproduct – this is very important information, as ozone harms our lungs and negatively affects our whole respiratory system. Another good indicator that you are dealing with quality components is filter life – most filters on the market have a 6-month lifespan (on average), while Cube Smart has double that amount. This means that you have to change filters fewer times in a year, which translates into more money saved long-term.

Quiet. Â One of the most common downsides of modern air purifiers is that they can get noisy, as you need powerful fans to move large quantities of air in a room. I am happy to say that Samsung Cube does not share this weakness. The noise levels range from 18dB (min fan speed) to 50 dB (max fan speed). Ok, sounds good and all, but what do these numbers mean?

To put it into perspective: 50 dB is the sound of moderate rainfall, while 60 dB (where most air purifiers fall on maximum fan speed) is the sound of a dishwasher or a normal conversation. If you are interested in air purifier noise levels, I wrote a separate post here. That being said, 18 dB is super quiet and one of the lowest numbers I have seen in an air purifier. You can safely put this Samsung Cube in your bedroom without worries.

Lots of intelligent features. Â You can tell that Samsung makes this air purifier just by looking at all the smart features they implemented. You are getting a high-quality air sensor with an automatic mode, Wifi, Alexa/Bixby compatibility, a modular connector, and google assistant software compatibility. This is way above average for air purifiers that you can find at this price point, as it is one of the “richest” smart features of air purifiers I came across. All these add to the overall value as it comes with a significant convenience factor and many options for the user. Want a more hands-off approach to your air purifier? No problem, just turn on automatic mode and let technology do all the heavy work. Awesome.

Cost-effective. This comes as a combination of multiple already mentioned factors that cut down on the long-term additional costs. As you probably know, when you buy an air purifier, you have extra costs, with energy consumption and replacement filters being the top two factors. Bigger and more powerful fans offer more results but consume power.

More power consumed = bigger electricity bill and so on – you get the point. Samsung`s Cube Smart found a way to develop a high-performing fan that has a power consumption of only 35W – this is almost half of what most other similarly priced air purifiers consume. Pair this with a yearly replacement filter (instead of every six months), and you get an excellent money saver right there.

Cons

Not suitable for large or extra-large rooms. Â All of the benefits come with a price, and while the fan technology is excellent and very quiet, it has its limitations. Namely, Samsung Cube Smart should only be used in small or medium-sized rooms of up to 310 square feet. It will not be as effective in larger spaces as 310 square feet, so you must keep that in mind.

You can solve this by putting together more than 1 unit (fun fact: the modular design of this air purifier allows you to stack multiple units on top of each other, which is quite handy, to be honest), but this, of course, means that you will pay a lot more money to achieve a bigger room coverage. It is more cost-effective to take an air purifier designed for large spaces – if you are looking for one, feel free to check out my list of the top 5 best air purifiers for large spaces.

It needs a Samsung account to use the app. This might not be an issue to some, but it is an extra step you simply have to take to fully enjoy all of the smart features that Samsung Cube Smart has. You need to install and register with the SmartThings app (made by Samsung), and you are good to go. I want to note that the Classic Samsung app (now discontinued) was more stable than the current SmartThings app, which can get buggy and a pain to use. Also, it supports only a 2.4 GHz Wifi network (and not 5 GHz) – not a significant thing, but a small downside nonetheless.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Top tier true HEPA filtration system
  • It does not produce ozone
  • Many smart features
  • Unique modular design
  • Very quiet
  • Cost-effective
Cons
  • Limited to medium or small-sized rooms
  • You need the app to use smart features
  • Quite heavy to move around

Samsung Cube Air purifier – Conclusion

cube smart air purifier

Samsung`s crack at the air purifier market proves to be a very successful attempt. Cube Smart is a great mid-to-high tier air purifier that combines all the main characteristics you want in an air purifier while incorporating an elegant, modern, and unique design. The fundamentals are covered: strong (although essential) filtration system, versatility, many adjustable brands, and a good fan.

You get many intelligent features, and the device offers you a lot of conveniences, as you can also use it with Alexa, Bixby, Google Assistant, and so on. Excellent fan technology keeps the noise levels down, making this a great choice even for your bedroom. As you would expect from a strong brand like Samsung, this air purifier does come with all of the essential certifications you would want, which further solidifies the quality that you are getting.

That being said, you have to ensure that your phone is compatible with the SmartThings app, as you will otherwise not be able to use many intelligent features. Also, this air purifier is best used for small and medium-sized rooms – you can always get around this issue by stacking multiple units or investing in an air purifier specially designed for large spaces. The last thing I want to add here is that this is quite heavy – you can still move it around your home, but don’t expect to take it with you on vacation.

This is a fantastic modern-looking air purifier that gives you a lot of conveniences and excellent performance in rooms of up to 310 square feet. Despite the few negatives, it is a worthwhile long-term investment and better than most of its competition.
