Coway Airmega 400 vs Rabbit Air Minusa2 Air Purifier Comparison 2022

Coway Airmega 400 vs Rabbit Air Minusa2 Air Purifier Comparison

In this post, I am going to compare two very popular mid-end air purifiers – the Coway Airmega 400 vs Rabbit Air Minusa2. Researching and choosing the correct air purifier should be the priority of everyone, as not all air purifiers are suitable for everyone equally. This is even more important when an air purifier comes with a high price tag, such as in this case.

Indoor air pollution is becoming more and more of an issue in recent times, which is why many people choose to equip their homes with an air purifier. Unfortunately, you can find a huge amount of different air purifier types and models on market, which can be challenging to differentiate. Even more so, if you are new to air purifiers and do not know what to look for. As I already mentioned, different air purifiers suit different people, depending on their situation and their air cleaning goals.

The purpose of this comparison is not to just tell you which one is just better but to help you find out which one is the best fit for you. These are two high-priced and quality models by two trustworthy brands, so you will get your money’s worth either way.

Skip to the very bottom if you only want the conclusion.

Both of these air purifiers are not exactly the definition of a portable air purifier. While both are rather large and on the heavy side, Coway Airmega 400 model will take up a bit more space than Minusa2. The biggest difference is that the Rabbit Air Minusa2 includes a wall mount kit, which you can use to mount it on the wall. It is a very slim device so it will not look weird mounted. In that regard, the Coway AIrmega 400 is a bit more flexible design-wise, since you can move it around from room to room a little bit easier. Below, I have included a size comparison of these two models, with a 6 ft human as scale.

We will leave the design and look different to the individual opinion, as some people will prefer the look of Airmega 400 and some of Air Minusa2. What I did want to mention here is that the Rabbit AIr minus comes with a quite unique design feature – you can choose between a few different designs.

Rabbit Air Minusa2 also has a lower power consumption than the Coway Airmega 400, meaning that you get to save more money long-term. Air Minusa2 model also comes in 3 different variations (more on this later): SPA-780A, SPA-780N, and SPA-700. SPA-700 is a bit less powerful, which is why it has a lower power consumption of 47W, compared to the other two (61 W).

Both air purifiers also have the Energy Star certification, meaning that they are very cost-efficient. Air Minusa2 is also certified for asthma and allergies by AAFA ( Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America).

As you can see, there are some similarities between these two air purifiers, but at the same time quite a lot of differences! Let us analyze them further.

Filtration system

This is a very interesting comparison, as both air purifiers use two very unique air cleaning methods. You could say that the Coway Airmega 400 uses a standard 3-stage filtration system consisting of a pre-filter, HEPA filter, an activated carbon filter. The only difference is that in place of a separate HEPA and carbon filter, you get this combined filter called the Max2 filter. In terms of effectiveness, you get the equivalent of a top-tier H13 HEPA filter, as it removes 99.97% of all harmful particles up to 0.3 micrometers in size. This is a very powerful and effective filtration system, however, it suffers from the same problems as the cheaper 3-stage filtration systems. It does not effectively deal with particles that are less than 0.3 micrometers in size, such as viruses and some bacteria too.

Airmega 400 airflow

Rabbit Air Minusa2 has a very unique filter composition, as you get six stages of air purification – 5 different filter types and an air ionizer function (optional). I want to talk about the filters a little bit more. The five filters that you get are a pre-filter, medium filter, BIOGS HEPA filter, carbon-activated filter, and a custom filter! The custom filter is what makes this filtration system really powerful and flexible, as you can select it based on your needs. Each of the four custom filters has a different role – you can choose between a Germ Defense, Pet Allergy, Odor Remover, or Toxin Absorber. I also want to touch a bit on the BIOGS HEPA filter, which is basically a normal top-tier HEPA, but with an added antibacterial coating that prevents bacteria and mold from forming on these filters over time. The added air ionizer (sometimes called negative ion generator or ion purifier) is the cherry on top that provides extra protection, especially against viruses and bacteria. There is no cleaning difference between the SPA-780A, SPA-780N, and SPA-700 variations.

Without a question, the Rabbit Air Minusa2 filtration system is better and more effective than the Coway Airmega 400 filtration system. Air Minusa’s 6 different stages of filtration give you an all-around top-tier cleaning system, ready to take on any challenge. The custom filter makes this an even more versatile device, allowing you to add an extra layer of protection against the pollutant group of your choice. The ionizer function makes this a complete filtration system package. Although I could not any find any information about the negative ion emission number, I did find that it produces only 0.002 ppm of ozone, which is way below the limit of 0.05 ppm.

Room coverage

Coway Airmega 400 covers 1,560 square feet, which is a lot. It can do 2 air changes per hour (ACH) at 1,560 sq ft, and 4 air changes per hour if you use it for rooms of about half the size – cca. 750 square feet. ACH is an important number for anyone that suffers from allergies, as you want to have as many air changes as possible – 4 ACH is good. The large fans and impressive fan power are what allow the Airmega 400 to cover such a big amount of space. Sadly, there is no official CADR rating listed for this model, but individual tests have put it on around 350 Dust/ 350 Smoke/ 400 Pollen (cfm). According to these numbers, it is unlikely that it can actually effectively cover the whole 1560 square feet of space. Despite that, you will struggle to find a purifier that can match the air cleaning coverage as Airmega 400 (even if it is less than 1560 sq ft), especially in this price range.

Coway Airmega 400

RabbitAir Minusa2 has two different room coverage numbers, depending on the variation that you choose. The SPA-700A can cover 700 square feet, while SPA-780 A and SPA-780N cover up to 815 square feet. ACH is the same as Coway Airmega and has a default value of 2 ACH, with the possibility to go up to 4 ACH. The three variations of this model also have two different sets of CADR ratings. While these numbers are high for an air purifier, they do not match the listed room coverage of 700 and 815 square feet. I ran a manual room coverage calculation, based on AHAM recommendations, which shows me that the optimal room coverage would actually be around 350 square feet, which is about half of what the manufacturer lists.

RabbitAir Minusa2

All in all, Coway Airmega 400 can cover more space than RabbitAir Minusa2. Even though everything indicates that you can not use both of these models to effectively cover their listed room coverage numbers, they still a very good job. Even if you lower room coverage numbers, you still get above-average air-cleaning space capabilities. In this regard, Airmega 400 leads the way, making it more usable in extra-large rooms than the Air Minusa2.

Noise levels

Noise levels of Coway Airmega 400 are between 22-52 dB (decibels). These are low and impressive numbers for such a powerful air purifier. It produces 52 dB of noise on max fan speed, which is a little bit over the 45 dB mark. Any noise over 45 dB can wake us up and disturb our sleep, especially if you are a light sleeper. On the lowest fan speed, the noise is only 22 dB, which is really quiet and barely even noticeable.

On the other hand, Rabbit Air Minusa2 (again) comes with two different noise level ranges. The SPA-700 has 20.8 – 45.6 dB range, while both SPA 780A+N have 25.6 – 51.3 dB range. This is even quieter than Coway Airmega 400. SPA 700 is the quietest out of all 3 variations, and only has 45.6 dB of noise on maximum fan speed, which is very impressive! This makes it suitable to even leave running on max settings in your bedroom during the night.

In case you want to know a little bit more about the noise levels of air purifiers, feel free to check our other post here.

In the noise level comparison of Coway Airmega 400 vs Rabbit Air Minusa2, we can see that the Minusa2 is the quieter model, in all 3 variations. And out of all three variations, SPA 700 is the quietest, making it the most suitable for rooms where noise can be an issue, such as a bedroom or study room.

Control panel

Both models have an impressive array of features. Coway Airmega 400 has probably the best air quality sensor currently on the market, giving you very accurate real-time reports. You also get an adjustable fan speed (4 levels), a timer (1,4,8 hour), and a couple of smart features. The smart features include an automatic mode, eco mode, and sleep mode. I especially like the eco mode as it optimizes your power consumption based on current air quality, saving you quite a bit of money through low power consumption. Automatic and eco modes work great together – automatic mode adjusts the settings according to the air quality, and eco mode actually shuts off the fan when the air is clean. You get no app with the Coway Airmega 400 (the 400S model has it though), so you can not check air quality status while away from home.

Rabbit Air Minusa2 has a lot of the same features as the Airmega 400. It does not have an ECO mode like Airmega 400, but it does have an extra air ionizer on/off button, light & odor sensor, ion control + mood light. The SPA 780N also has an added wifi function and an app that allows you to remotely connect to and control the device. It is an iOS application and you can not find it as an Andriod app, which can be a negative experience for some.

In terms of the control panel, both air purifiers offer many adjustable settings and smart features, but the Rabbit Minusa2 has the edge here in terms of the number of features and flexibility. The Coway Airmega 400 shines in a better air quality sensor and eco mode, which is a function that saves you more money as more time passes. If you are looking for a lot of customization then the Rabbit Minusa2 is the better choice, while Airmega 400 is more for someone that really likes to min-max costs and save as much money as possible. Also if you are looking for wifi and remote control flexibility, then your only option here would be the SPA-780N variation of Minusa2.

Coway Airmega 400 vs Rabbit Air Minusa2 – Conclusion

You are looking at two great mid-to-high-class air purifiers. In terms of pure air cleaning effectiveness, I can safely say that the Rabbit Air Minusa2 has the most complete air cleaning system, effectively removing more air pollutants than the Airmega 400. That being said, Coway Airmega 400 has a more powerful fan system, allowing it to push out cleaner air further than all 3 variations of Air Minusa2. Air Minusa2 is overall more cost-effective than Airmega 400, as it has lower power consumption and annual filter cost. In terms of settings and features, you will get more customizable options with Air Minusa2, with an added remote control option through wifi, if you choose the SPA-780N variation. Rabbit Air minusa2 is also quieter, therefore more suitable for bedrooms – especially the SPA 700 variation.

All in all, these are two powerful air purifier options and both have their own ideal customer types. That being said, I would recommend the Coway Airmega 400 if you are looking for a powerful air purifier for extra-large rooms, such as bigger offices or even small apartments. The powerful fan system will make sure that you get clean air in a large area while maintaining excellent air-purifying effectiveness.

For everything else, I would take the Rabbit Air Minusa2 over the Coway Airmega 400. If your main concern is air cleaning effectiveness, which is especially important for allergy and asthma sufferers, go with Air Minusa2 as is has one of the best air cleaning systems out there. The custom filter also makes it convenient for pretty much any type of situation, making it an obvious choice over Airmega 400 in this case. Due to the low noise levels, it is a great fit for bedrooms and study rooms, but equally as effective in any small, medium, and even larger rooms (around 400-500 square feet ideally).

If your main concern is cost-effectiveness – you will want to go with Rabbit Air Minusa2 over Coway Airmega 400. Although the Airmega 400 is a bit lower-priced than Air Minusa2 and comes with an eco function that further saves you some money, you will still be more cost-effective with Air minusa2 long-term. This is a result of lower overall power consumption and quite cheaper replacement filters.
