Top 5 Best Air Ionizers For Home 2020

Air ionizers (sometimes called negative ion generators or ionic air purifiers) can be one of the best defenses against indoor air pollution, which is becoming an increasing issue in modern times. So in this post, I am going to list and discuss the top 5 best air ionizers for your home, which you can currently get on the market. Air ionizers are just one type of air purifier. Sadly, there is a lot of misinformation about these great air-cleaning devices. Many people and sites are throwing air ionizer labels on a variety of products, which are not really that effective. Consequently, this gives air ionizers a negative look.

In short, these are my Top 5 Negative Ion generators for a home in 2024:

  1. Vortex VI 3500 – best performance and recommended pick
  2. Clarifion negative ion generator – best all-around (safest) choice
  3. IonPacific Ionbox – runner-up for recommended pick
  4. IonPacific IonMi – the most versatile and portable
  5. HAPHID negative ion generator – best budget option

Let us get the most important thing out of the way – the best air ionizers for home are only very effective as a standalone unit. This is why our top 5 best air ionizers for home 2024 list includes only the best standalone air ionizers. If you are looking primarily for an air ionizer machine, then you have come to the right place. You will not find any combined air purifiers on this list, because they are not true air ionizers, even if they have an ionization function. I will explain this in a separate section at the very end of this post.

I have also reviewed most of these individual products in other posts, which I will add in the appropriate product section.

1. Wein Vortex VI-3500 – The #1 Recommended pick

★★★★★

Features

  • Color: Black
  • Product Dimensions: 7.5 x 7 x 1.5 inches
  • Item Weight: ‎1.48 Pounds
  • Control Method: App
  • Wattage: 24

Out of all the air ionizers on this list, Wein Vortex-VI 3500 easily takes the top spot It has an unrivaled emission of 3,4 trillion negative ions per second and no detectable ozone – the perfect combination. I do want to talk about the huge amount of negative ions that blow other competition out of the water. Where is the catch? Well, the Wein Vortex product page only lists ion flow, and not the real negative ion emission (measured in cm3/sec, and not only in seconds). Ion flow basically tells us how fast negative ions are flowing out of the air ionizers. However, it does not tell us what is the concentration of these negative ions in one cm3 per second actually is. Negative ion emission is typically much lower than ion flow, but despite that, the actual negative ion emission of Wein Vortex VI is way above other air ionizers on this list. Due to the high negative ion emission, it is effective against all air pollutants, even ones that are 0.001 micrometers in size.

What is also great is that this device does not produce any detectable ozone. This means that it is safe to use around children, the elderly, and anyone with respiratory issues – all groups that are otherwise more exposed to the negative side effects of ozone. The device also features an antenna-like structure that emits negative ions and at the same time draws air pollutants towards it. You could say that the Vortex VI-3500 lives up to its name, literally!

All in all, the Wein Vortex VI 3500 is easily the best air ionizer on our Top 5 Best Air Ionizers For Home 2020 list, and rightfully so. While the design is not really that modern or great-looking, it does more than makeup for it in superb air cleaning abilities of up to 800 square feet and no detectable ozone byproduct. I have also reviewed this product individually, which you can find on my other post here.

2. IonPacific Ionbox – Runner up for the #1

★★★★★

Features

  • Color: White
  • Product Dimensions: 2.1″D x 4.4″W x 6.2″H
  • Item Weight: 4.8 Pounds
  • Control Method: Touch
  • Wattage:

This was my runner-up of the best air ionizer for a home in 2020. The IonPacific Ionbox emits a very respectable number of 20 million negative ions per cm3/s. While this number is not as high as the Vortex VI, it does belong in the top tier of air ionizers based on negative ion emission alone. 20 million negative ions cm/3 sec is enough to cover medium to small rooms, which is great for any air ionizer of this (small) size. I always recommend that air ionizers have a minimum of 6 or 7 million negative ions per cm3/second in order to start being effective and Ionbox definitely checks this box.

The biggest downside of IonPacific Ionbox is that it produces some ozone as a byproduct. Even though this number is within the limits set by governmental agencies, it is still in the upper ozone production limit which I do not like. This makes it not the best choice for anyone with respiratory issues such as allergies or asthma because ozone acts as a lung irritant. it is also the only air ionizer on this list that uses a fan, meaning that it can emit some noise.

I put the IonPacific Ionbox as a runner-up for the best air purifier for home in 2020, despite it having the upper limits of ozone and not the second-best negative ion emission number. 20 million negative ions per cm3/sec put it in the top tier anyway, it is more affordable than my #1 pick, and it is made by a good & respectable brand, which makes it reliable. I have also reviewed this product individually, which you can find on my other post here.

3. HAPHID negative air generator – The best budget choice

★★★★★

Features

  • Color: Silver Frame
  • Product Dimensions: 2.17″D x 3.35″W x 1.97″H
  • Item Weight: ‎8.15 Pounds
  • Control Method: Touch
  • Wattage: 2 Watt-hours

For anyone that is more price-sensitive or has a limited budget but still wants a good quality air ionizer, then HAPHID negative ion generator is the best choice for you. This air ionizer comes with a very high negative ion emission of 32 million negative ions, which is the second-highest on my Top 5 Best Air Ionizers For Home 2020 list. This makes it suitable for medium and small-sized rooms, with the potential to even try it in a larger room. While prices do vary a bit, you can usually expect to spend around $60 for a pack of three HAPHID negative ion generators, which is the biggest bang for your buck, if you are on a tight budget.

32 million negative ions make this air ionizer effective against air pollutants of all sizes, making it suitable for the bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and office. It is also very portable and easy to use – you simply plug it in and let the device do the rest automatically, no interaction is needed from you. It also produces no ozone, which is a big plus and puts it far above all other air ionizers at this price point. No ozone also means that it is completely safe to use for anyone that suffers from allergies or asthma, making it a very safe choice.

The reason I did not list it as a runner-up for the best air ionizer for home 2020 is because of the cheap material quality. HAPHID negative air purifiers are not very durable and can break quite easily. This is to be expected, as you are getting a very powerful air purifier at the expense of durability (due to the low price). But for this price, you are getting the best of the best and you can always reduce the chances of it breaking by more careful handling.

4. Clarifion Negative Ion Generator – The most balanced choice

★★★★★

Features

  • Color: White
  • Product Dimensions: 1.82″D x 2.56″W x 4.13″H
  • Item Weight: ‎0.16 Pounds
  • Control Method: Touch
  • Wattage:

Many good things can be said for the Clarifion negative ion generator. I have it listed as my “safest” air purifier pick as it has the most balanced combination of performance, price, and durability. It has a 10 million cm3/s negative ion emission, which is solid (remember, everything above 6 or 7 million is a very good start). This number makes one unit suitable for small rooms, but you can potentially try using only one in a medium-sized room too, depending on the air quality. If the air quality is bad, then you will have more air pollutants in the air – this means that you need more negative ions to counter that. In any case, you can always use multiple units in a larger room to cover the whole area.

Clarifion negative ion generator also does not produce any ozone, which is the other best information you could hope for in a good air ionizer. This makes it safe to use for anyone and for any duration (hint: best used continuously). Most people use Clarifion in a bathroom, basement, office, garage, bedroom, closet, and kitchen.

You can not really go wrong with this air ionizer. It is among the more affordable ones on this list and you can get some major savings if you buy them in bulk (between 2 – 10 units). This combination of affordable price, very decent amount of negative ion emission, no ozone, and good durability make it the best all-around air purifier of 2020 for home. While it does not excel in any category, it does everything well. For this reason, it is often sold out so if you manage to catch it while in stock – consider taking that opportunity. I have also reviewed this product individually, which you can find on my other post here.

5. Ionpacific IonMi – The most versatile and portable choice

★★★★★

Features

  • Color: Charcoal
  • Product Dimensions: 1.54″D x 3.86″W x 4.29″H
  • Item Weight: ‎ 4.66 Pounds
  • Control Method: Touch
  • Wattage:

While most air purifiers on this list are very small and portable, the edge for portability and versatility goes to Ionpacific IonMi. This is a very interesting air ionizer which a crossover between a personal and home air ionizer. Personal means that you can actually wear it around your neck, taking it with you anywhere you go. For a personal air purifier, it outperforms its competitors by as much as 10x – outperforms in the sense of negative ion emission, which Ionpacific IonMi lists at 20 million per cm3/second. This is by far the highest among any other personal air ionizers and at the same time a great amount for any home air ionizer.

What I did not like though, is that it does emit some ozone. This makes it pretty much unwearable around your neck if you suffer from allergies or asthma, especially since the ozone is produced literally under your nose. Other people will not have such an issue wearing it, as moving around and the constant flow of new air will disperse most of the ozone before it has the potential to start irritating your lungs. People with respiratory issues are more sensitive to an even smaller amount of ozone, which is why they will feel the negative effects faster.

What is also unique about the IonPacific IonMi is that comes with a battery that can be fully charged in 2-3 hours and lasts up to 14 days of use. It also comes with a USB plug, which is convenient to use pretty much everywhere. This is why I put it as the best portable and most versatile air ionizer out of the listed 5.

Air ionizer buying guide

I am including an air ionizer buying guide section in order to answer the main question of what you should look for when buying an air ionizer. If you are new to air ionizers make sure to read my other post about the differences between an air ionizer and air purifiers.

The two most important things to look at in an air ionizer are the negative ion emission and ozone byproduct. I will explain each one of these more in detail below.

Negative ion emission

This is the lifeblood of all air ionizers and the most vital part. It tells us how effective an air ionizer will be at dealing with air pollution. There are many harmful particles that consist of indoor air pollution – from dust and pollen all the way to bacteria and viruses (they are the smallest in size). Because of polarity, negative ions have the ability to neutralize even the smallest harmful particles in the air. When a negative ion attaches itself to a harmful particle, it remains attached forever – it can not be “reused”. Consequently, you need a high amount of negative ions to be able to deal with the constant influx of high amount of indoor air pollutants.

As a bare minimum, I always recommend at least 6-7 million negative ions per cm3/sec in order for the air ionizer to be effective – even in small rooms. You can get away with less, but then you risk the possibility of some air pollutants remaining in the air due to a lack of negative ions. This is why the lowest negative ion emission in my top 5 air purifiers for home in 2020 is 10 million per cm3/sec. The bigger the room and the more polluted the air, the more negative ions you will need.

If an air ionizer or a device that has an ionization feature provides no information about the negative ion emission, then you can be sure that it does not have a high enough number to be efficient. So you can not expect any decent results from such negative ion generators/air ionizers.

Ozone byproduct

This is the second most important characteristic that you have to look out for when choosing an air ionizer. Most of them have ozone as a byproduct, which is not really good news. I have written quite a bit on ozone and air ionizers in my other posts, which can be found here and here. Feel free to check those links out if you want more information on the effects of ozone, but all you need to know for now is that ozone is not good for your health, especially your lungs.

FDA (Food and Drug Administration ) has put a limit of 0.05 ppm of ozone concentration for air purifying devices. Although 0.05 ppm is considered within limits, you will still experience negative effects with prolonged exposure. Anyone that suffers from allergies, has any respiratory issues or has a weaker immune system (kids, the elderly) is that much more susceptible to harmful ozone effects even at lower concentrations than 0.05 ppm. This is why it is very important to try and get an air ionizer that does not emit any ozone, or at close to 0 as you can get.

Why should you get an air ionizer?

In case you did not already know, air ionizers have the potential to be the most effective type of air purifier. This, however, depends on the two above-mentioned factors. If you can get one that fits both of the criteria of high negative ion emission and no ozone, you are looking at a great air ionizer that will effectively ionize your air.

Other benefits that air ionizers generally have over other types of air purifiers are:

  • Silent. The vast majority of air ionizers do not use any kind of fans, making their operation completely silent. This makes them suitable to put in a study room or even next to your bed without risking the noise waking you up.
  • Low energy consumption. Out of all the air purifier types, air ionizers consume the lowest amount of energy. They usually spend only a few watts at most, which is much less than other types of air purifiers. This makes the air ionizer the most cost-effective air purifier long-term.
  • No filters or other changeable parts. Another very cost-effective benefit of air ionizers. They do not use any type of filter or other parts that would need to be changed, saving you quite a bit of money over the years.

All in all, air purifiers are an excellent solution to the ever-increasing indoor air pollution. I hope this top 5 best air purifier list for home helps you choose the best one for your situation.
